Are you an Agnostic Theist?

You may be here because you are searching for answers or like minded individuals. Curiosity may have brought you here or maybe you have already concluded that God or Gods as the case may be; are beyond the knowable grasp of mankind.

Maybe your faith in a particular God or belief system are certain and strong. Maybe someone told you they were an Agnostic Theist and you wanted to know more about Agnostic Theism.

Maybe you have doubts about the God or Gods you were raised to believe in yet you still believe in the existence of a God or Gods.

Maybe you have researched mankind’s history and seen how beliefs changed from one generation to the next; from century to century and even longer periods of time.

Maybe you remain unconvinced that one religion has all the correct answers. Maybe you believe that each religion is simply an interpretation of God or Gods; riddled with inconsistencies.

Maybe you are an Agnostic Theist; maybe you are not …

What is an Agnostic Theist?

An Agnostic Theist has reached two simple conclusions:

1. God is beyond the understanding of mankind (or at least himself or herself); unknown and unknowable.

2. There is a God or Gods; some guiding force, a creator or a higher power of some kind.

These two points in their simplicity define the foundation of Agnostic Theism.

More about Agnostic Theism

Agnostic theism is not a unique or new concept; agnostic theism is humble and accepting of our limitations as human beings. Agnostic theism does not aim to disprove the existence of a God or Gods rather it accepts that a God or Gods does in fact exist.

An agnostic theist accepts that such a deity is beyond our understanding. An agnostic theist has no benefit in disputing or disproving another individuals interpretation of God or Gods.

Many agnostic theists however do conclude that there are indeed inconsistencies in these interpretations of a higher power. This conclusion is often reached due to the way such beliefs have been used to manipulate and control mankind.

Wars have been fought over such beliefs and this drives some agnostic theists to become activists. Some are driven to activism due to finding peace in agnostic theism and wishing to share it with others.

An Agnostic Theist’s acceptance that God is unknowable also implies that even if God has some preference for one creature over another; we do not know which. Therefore the human is not necessarily preferred to the horse; earth not necessarily preferred to another planet.

An Agnostic Theist however is often open to logic and reason behind belief systems; rules and even in some cases rituals as well as community.

For example an agnostic theist may see logic and reason in not engaging in extra-marital sex. However the reasoning will not be because it is a sin against God. Rather it is due to the love they have for another, not wishing to hurt or betray. They may also logically deduce that such behavior may increase the likelihood of contracting STD’s.

On another hand an agnostic theist may have different guiding principles; they may apply honesty and live a poly amorous lifestyle; the Agnostic Theist is not guided or restricted by what other people dictate as the word of God.

Ultimately the agnostic theist believes in the existence of a God which they do not understand and therefore base their morality; lifestyle and purpose on other elements. One such element is of course the pursuit of happiness
